THE PENNINE TRAINING AREA of the NORTHERN GOLDEN RETRIEVER ASSOCIATION
Held at Chatsworth Park Derbyshire
The Pennine Training Area of the Northern Golden Retriever Association held an Open Test at Chatsworth Park Derbyshire by kind permission of The Duke and Duchess of Devonshire.
The Judges were Mr Phil Garton, Mr Guy Radford, MrJohn Benyon and Mr Dave Haycock.
45 dogs comprising of 14 Golden Retrievers, 29 Labradors, 1 Chesapeake Bay and 1 Flat Coat completed 7 tests. The morning tests were single retrieves namely: -A long mark in a shallow lake which was a swim for the smaller Labs but taller Goldens, the Flat Coat and the Chesapeake could wade almost to the dummy. A mark into a clearing with wooded areas either side which was liberally populated with live game .A blind in open parkland with a diversionary dummy planted some 30 feet away which was not to be picked, and a mark into heavy cover in a young plantation where accurate marking and determined hunting was called for to find the dummy. All dogs were then taken through to the afternoon tests. Guy and Dave judged a walk up which consisted of 4 dogs in line at once walking up in pastureland with sheep and live game to complicate matters. Each dog got a marked retrieve with a diversionary dummy thrown at the same time, which was not to be picked, and a remembered mark. Meanwhile Phil judged a blind retrieve across lake, which thoroughly tested the dog's ability to handle on water. And John judged a blind In a bluebell with the overpowering smell of flowering bluebells to mask the sent of the dummy and live game running about the tempt the dogs from the straight and narrow.
