The Pennine Training area held any variety Puppy, Novice and Veteran tests at a new ground at Belmont in Lancashire on Sunday 13 July 2003. The tests were kindly sponsored by Masters dog food and were held by invitation of North West Water, who own the land.
The day was forecast to be hot and sunny but with the high elevation of the ground there was a cooling breeze and plenty of shade from trees meant that dogs and handlers alike could keep comfortable and enjoy themselves.
Judges for the day were Mrs Pat Robertson and Mr Trefor Richards, both Pennine stalwarts for some years.
First to compete were the puppies who completed 5 tests, Starting with an obedience test then moving onto a short double mark with one nominated dummy to be picked. This was followed by a long single mark into long grass and a blind down a track. Finally to test steadyness, all the dogs were sat up together and dummies were thrown out in front of them and each handler in turn had to hand pick a dummy whilst leaving their dog on a Stay.
The results were as follows:-
1st Mr & Mrs Crookes Golden Retriever, Widcombe Daniel of Moscargrange,
Handled by Mrs A. Crookes
2nd Mrs D. Hubbard's Labrador, Kinderton Captain Hook.
3rd Mr P. Burrows Labrador, Nevillebriar Hazel
4th Mr J Benyon's Labrador, Hartwood Hill Exeat.
The novices and the veterans then completed the same set of tests but for different awards 8 veterans and 14 novices completed 5 tests starting with 2 long downhill marks, one in woodland and one into long grass on the edge of a wood. This was followed by 2 blinds, one in long grass between 2 bushes and a further in a heathery depression complicated by the undulating terrain which had to be negotiated to get to the dummy After lunch a walk-up provided 2 further retrieves, a mark and a blind in open woodland with long grass underfoot. First and second places were decided in both classes with a run-off, with our F.T. Sec Phil Wagland being involved in both.
The results were as follows:-
Novice,
1st Mr P. Wagland's Golden Retriever, Pebbletoft Chorus
2nd Mrs. Crawford's Labrador, Millcottage Laural.
3rd Mr D. Alker's Labrador Simply Sugar
4th Mr & Mrs Crookes Golden Retriever, Pebbletoft Lyric of Moscargrange,
handled by Mr S Crookes
Veteran
1st Mr P. Wagland's Golden Retriever, Ft.Ch. Standerwick Rhumba of Pebbletoft
2nd Mr P Wagland's Golden Retriever Standerwick Tango of Pebbletoft, Handled by
Mrs A Wagland
3rd Mrs E Read's Labrador, Saxaphone Eskimo Nell
4th Mrs M. Crawford's Labrador Pasturelands Amber.
On such a beautiful day and being able to run dogs in well set tests on excellent ground everyone enjoyed themselves, none more than the 8 veterans who thoroughly enjoyed their special day out, Special mention should go to Anna Wagland's Golden bitch Pebbletoft Cherry, who, at thirteen and a half was the oldest dog there but could put some of the youngsters to shame for sheer enthusiasm for the job. Thanks must go to Phil Smithies, the new PTA secretary, who set the tests together with his wife Joyce and to the other Pennine members who helped by throwing dummies and car sitting, so that cars with dogs in could be safely left open in the car park, a very important job on such a warm day.
