In 1977 a meeting was organised to see how many enthusiasts would be interested in forming a club for the South Eastern area. The response was overwhelming, and so the Society was formed, with Mrs. Joan Tudor as the first Chairman, and the late Mrs. Myrtle Pounds as Secretary. The objectives of the Society were to cater for the interests of all Golden Retriever enthusiasts, and to encourage the breeding of Golden Retrievers of true type, temperament and working ability.
The Society has always provided a full programme, with Social, Educational and competitive events being held from the very early days. Championship show status was granted in 1980, and Limited obedience shows were started at the same time. The Society have held Working Tests from the first, and were granted Field Trial status in 1999. In 2004, the first all Golden Retriever Agility competition was held.
